Man United target to force £40m Chelsea move with transfer request

According to reports from The Sun yesterday evening, Chelsea and Manchester United target John Stones is on the verge of handing in a formal transfer request at Everton.

The 21 year-old has emerged as the most sought-after centre-back in the Premier League this summer with Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City all linked to his signature over the last few weeks.

The Premier League champions have already seen three bids rejected by the Toffees, the latest being worth around £30million, and it’s believed they’re now planning a fourth and final offer of £40million – but remain concerned that Manchester United could launch a rival bid once Roberto Martinez has begrudgingly agreed to sell.

However, the Blues’ ultimate bid could depend on Stones demonstrating his willingness to leave Goodison Park, according to reports earlier this week, with the west Londoners feeling they’ve shown more than enough commitment to signing the England international already.

And according to The Sun, that’s exactly what the 6 foot 2 centre-half now intends to do, in order to force a ‘dream move’ to Stamford Bridge.

They claim he’s desperate to join Jose Mourinho’s all-star cast and has grown so frustrated with Everton’s reluctance to sell him – in spite of three significant bids – that he’s prepared to ‘go public’ with a formal transfer request.

The Sun isn’t the most reliable of sources and Stones doesn’t come off as a particularly self-interested fellow, to the extent that he’d manufacture a move away.

But with less than two weeks of the transfer window remaining, it may require something as bold as a transfer request to get the Chelsea deal over the line.
