Chelsea fear Man United will hijack deal for Golden Boy nominee

John Stones

According to reports from The Daily Mail last weekend, Chelsea fear Manchester City and Manchester United will launch late offers for their priority transfer target – Everton’s John Stones.

The 21 year-old, who was nominated for 2014’s prestigious Golden Boy award, has emerged as the most sought-after centre-back in the Premier League this summer with Chelsea, United and City all linked to his signature over the last few weeks.

The Premier League champions are the front-runners in the race to sign the England international and have already seen two bids rejected. They’re expected to make another, around the value of £30million, before the close of the transfer window.

But according to The Mail, Chelsea are growing increasingly concerned that the Manchester outfits could look to hijack any deal at the final stages; once Chelsea have convinced Toffees boss Roberto Martinez to sell the 6 foot 2 centre-half.

City and United are both known to be in the market for added options at the heart of defence and Stones would fit the bill perfectly.

It follows reports last week claiming the Red Devils will use Jonny Evans as a makeweight if they launch a bid for for the Everton prodigy. The Northern Ireland international was linked with a Goodison Park move in May.

Why would a class act like John Stones with everything before him want to step down to a small club languishing near the bottom of the table?
