According to reports from Manchester Evening News yesterday evening, Manchester United have made Southampton midfielder Morgan Schniederlin their priority midfield target for the summer transfer window.

The France international has emerged as one of the most formidable enforcers in the Premier League since the Saints’ top flight ascension in summer 2012, this season averaging the second-most tackles per match, 3.7, of any player in the division.

The 25 year-old has been mooted as a prime target of Arsenal and Manchester United for some time, with initial reports emerging in April.

But as This Is Futbol revealed last week, Schneiderlin’s £25million price-tag has reportedly forced the Gunners into seeking cheaper alternatives, with Sevilla star Grzegorz Krychowiak – also a target of Southampton – allegedly topping their list.

That’s left the Red Devils in pole position to sign the former Strasbourg youngster and reports from MEN suggest they’re more than happy with that situation.

According to the Manchester news outlet, Old Trafford boss Louis van Gaal sees Schneiderlin as United’s next long-term right-sided centre-mid, who can also fill in for ageing anchorman Michael Carrick when required, and has resultantly made him one of the club’s priority targets.

A move seems more than likely, with the midfielder recently admitting he’d leave St. Mary’s for Champions League football.
