Joe Gomez

According to reports from The Express this morning, Borussia Dortmund have emerged as shock suitors in the race to sign Charlton Athletic prodigy Joe Gomez.

The 17 year-old has impressed since his step up to first team level this season, making 16 starts and five substitute appearances in the Championship for the south London club.

He’s predominantly featured at right back since his league debut in August, but the 6 foot 2 defender is expected to develop into a centre-half.

Arsenal and Manchester City have both been mooted as potential suitors of the England U19, who boasts 25 caps for the Junior Lions across the youth levels, with the Daily Mail claiming in April the Premier League duo were considering summer bids around the £8million mark.

But it appears news of Gomez’ progress this season has spanned further than the British isles. According to The Express, Borussia Dortmund are also interested in signing the defender this summer, who has been nominated for the Championship’s Apprentice of the Year award.

Their offer, however, would consist of just £1million and a string of appearance-based add-ons.
