Atletico Madrid striker Matheus Cunha would be a long-term signing for Wolves, should they bring him in, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

Wolves have been linked with the Brazilian attacker, who looks set to leave Atletico Madrid in the January window, as they look to strengthen their side for a tough relegation battle.

They currently sit rock bottom of the Premier League, but new manager Julen Lopetegui is to take the reigns once the Premier League resumes after the World Cup, and they will need to bring in reinforcements during the January transfer window.

A striker is a priority, with Raul Jimenez and Sasa Kaladjzic suffering from injuries, whilst Diego Costa has been underwhelming, and Cunha appears to be a top target.

Speaking exclusively to This Is Futbol, O’Rourke claimed that even if Cunha was to arrive on an initial loan, that the club sees the 23-year-old as a long-term signing rather than a quick fix.

“I think if Matheus Cunha can come in, he’ll definitely bolster their attacking options and if he can score goals I’m sure Wolves would like to sign him permanently whether it’s a loan deal in January.

“If he comes in and does well for Wolves, I’m sure they’ll be looking to bring him in as a long-term signing.”

TIF thoughts on Cunha and Wolves…

Although he is yet to score this season and has never been a prolific goalscorer, Cunha’s strengths are off the ball, and he could help Wolves improve as an attacking unit.

With wingers such as Goncalo Guedes, Pedro Neto and Daniel Podence, if the Brazilian helps the team create more chances he will increase the overall number of goals in the side.

Wolves have scored just eight goals in the league this season, and urgently need more firepower in the side to help stave off relegation.

It is a risk bringing in a striker without a proven track record in front of goal, but Cunha ranks in the top 5% of forwards for tackles, blocks and interceptions, showing that he can press and defend from the front and ultimately improve his team’s attacking play.

If Wolves as a whole start firing in more goals, they will have a chance at staying up, and if Cunha does well and they remain in the Premier League, Lopetegui should do all he can to keep the attacker.
