Leeds United have been reported as an interested party in the race for the Atletico Madrid forward Matheus Cunha but could now miss out on the Brazilian.

And presenter Conor McGilligan has been left gutted after hearing that the Whites are now potentially going to lose out on the 23-year-old to one of their Premier League rivals.

David Ornstein has claimed the West Yorkshire side have a ‘serious interest’ in the Atletico forward with Wolverhampton Wanderers seemingly leading the race for the Brazilian.

First up, which of these World Cup debutants could Leeds go back in for this winter?

Cunha’s time in Spain has been a struggle for the 23-year-old with just two starts in La Liga to his name so far this season (via Transfermarkt).

However, the Brazilian’s time in Spain could well be coming to a conclusion but McGilligan has been left frustrated that Victor Orta is potentially set to miss out on the forward to Wolves:

“This is a bit of a devastating blow, really. And the reason I’m saying that is because on another transfer window, I’d have maybe given Leeds a little bit of slack. I’d have said, oh well, we’ve got other targets to go on. And I mean, hopefully we have, otherwise we’re literally not gonna get another striker in this window.

“However, Cunha is a previous target. He’s someone who we’ve clearly monitored, he’s someone who Bielsa clearly liked. He’s someone who [Victor] Orta clearly likes. And it’s just such a shame that we’re not able to get that one over the line.”

TIF Thoughts on McGilligan’s comments…

We can fully understand McGilligan’s concerns ahead of the January transfer window as Cunha has shown a lot of potential during his time in Germany which could potentially improve the Leeds attack.

With Patrick Bamford’s game time over the last year taking a huge blow, this will feel like an opportunity to be had for Victor Orta to make an early start on Leeds’ January business.

However, it instead looks as if Leeds are being handed a double blow. Not only are they potentially going to miss out on the 23-year-old, but they are potentially going to see one of their rivals at the bottom end of the table, Wolves, strengthened for the second part of the campaign.
