Journalist, Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport, that Wolverhampton Wanderers have looked ‘very closely’ at Sevilla full-back Marcos Acuna.

The 31-year-old was called up by Argentina, for their World Cup squad. One report claims that a number of other clubs also have an interest in landing the services of Acuna. The clubs mentioned were Inter Milan, Villarreal and Eintracht Frankfurt.

Since 2017, Acuna has been playing his football in Europe, playing for Sporting CP and then Sevilla (joining in 2020). In that time, the Argentine has played in major European competitions, including the Champions League and the Europa League.

Jones stated, ‘Marcos Acuna has been looked at very closely by Wolves and that pursuit is considered active.’

TIF’s view on Jones’ comments…

We believe that the left-back position is where Wolves need to strengthen come January, Acuna would be a strong and experienced candidate for that role.

The side from the Black Country only has the likes of Jonny Oto and Rayan Ait-Nouri who can fill the position at the moment.

Acuna, who has been dubbed as ‘one of the best’, excels with the ball at his feet and is a strong dribbler. Across Europe’s top five leagues, the Champions League and Europa League, the 31-year-old is in the top 6% for dribbles completed in the last year (FBref).

Back in November, Wolves appointed Julen Lopetegui as their new manager, following the sacking of Bruno Lage. The Spaniard’s appointment could well help attract players like Acuna.

Lopetegui has managed some top clubs including Real Madrid, Sevilla, Porto and Spain. Before landing the job with Los Blancos, the 56-year-old was the Head of Scouting for the club. With an attractive CV like that, numerous players could be interested in a move to Molineux.
