Presenter Conor McGilligan has outlined his disappointment as Leeds United look likely to miss out on Matheus Cunha amid strong competition for his signature.

As of late, the Atletico Madrid man has been heavily linked with a possible move to a Premier League outfit in the upcoming January transfer window.

Indeed, Wolves look to be favourites to land the forward. However, according to journalist Matteo Moretto, the deal isn’t done yet and Leeds are still ‘in the race’ for a possible deal.

However, seeing as the Whites aren’t really looking in a strong position to sign Cunha, McGilligan has spoken about how will be a ‘shame’ to miss out on the player.

Speaking on the One Leeds Fan Channel, he said (09:05): “Apparently Matheus Cunha, Leeds are going to be looking to go for a blockbuster transfer for the striker – according to journalist Matteo Moretto.

“Keep an eye on that one. It looks like Wolves are actually talking to Cunha now, it doesn’t seem that Leeds are… it seems a lot more inquiry-based. So yeah, it will be interesting to see how that moves along.”

TIF Thoughts on Matheus Cunha and Leeds United…

In that aforementioned report from Moretto, the likes of Aston Villa and Everton are also linked with Cunha and so even if Wolves don’t sign him, it’s not as if Leeds are necessarily next in line.

The 23-year-old hasn’t exactly set the world on fire in La Liga, with just seven goal and eight assists in 54 games for Atletico Madrid. Even so, with eight caps with Brazil, he clearly has the potential to be a clever signing this January for whoever signs him.

It’ll be interesting to see how Cunha gets on in England if he does move this winter, but Leeds may well come to regret not pushing harder for a deal should he end up starring for a rival club in the near future.

They already look set to miss out on Cody Gakpo, they won’t want to suffer that again.
