Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Julen Lopetegui is expected to be handed a transfer warchest for the upcoming January window.

This has been suggested by TalkSport’s transfer expert Alex Crook, who has been speaking about the plans at Molineux to strengthen Lopetegui’s squad.

It is now expected Atletico Madrid’s Matheus Cunha will also make the move from La Liga to the Premier League to join up with the Spanish manager at Wolves.

The Brazilian forward has already undergone a medical ahead of the proposed move and could be set to become Lopetegui’s first addition as the Wolves boss.

Test your knowledge on Wolves' managerial candidates! First up: in what year did Sevilla manager Julen Lopetegui almost take the Wolves hotseat?

However, as well as the expected arrival of the Brazilian attacker, Crook believes the Wolves owners are intent on financially backing the 56-year-old going into the January window.

He said: “Wolves, I think are going to be really busy. I was told yesterday [Tuesday] that there’s a massive warchest that has been made available to Lopetegui, their new manager – that was one of the attractions of him coming.

“You’ve mentioned already Matheus Cunha, he will have his medical today [Wedneaday], we understand, ahead of completing what will be a loan move initially and then a deal that could rise to as much as £40m.”

TIF Thoughts on Crook’s comments…

This will surely be music to the ears of all those at Molineux after what has been a shaky start to the 2022/23 campaign which sees Wolves slumped at the bottom of the table going into the World Cup break.

And it is apparent a big area for improvement is their output in front of goal, with no other side scoring less than Wolves’ tally of eight league goals this season.

In Cunha, they may have an attacking spark who has the potential to add goals, but he has not proven himself to be a dependable source of goals over the years (via Transfermarkt).

With this in mind, knowing the Wolves owners are not intent on stopping with the expected signing of the Brazilian, it will certainly be reassuring to Lopetegui to know his attacking options will likely be improved over the January window.
