Former Tottenham Hotspur man Paul Robinson has urged the club to sell Emerson Royal and use the money gained to find a replacement.

Corriere dello Sport (via TEAMtalk) claimed that Inter want to bring the full-back in as a potential replacement for Denzel Dumfries.

Spurs signed the player in September 2021 from Barcelona and he has made 59 appearances for the club across all competitions.

And speaking to Football Insider, Robinson claims that Tottenham should ‘take the money’ from his sale and ‘sign a replacement’, with the Brazilian failing to hit the standards required at Spurs.

He stated: “He is nowhere near good enough. It worries me when both Emerson Royal and Davinson Sanchez start together. Emerson Royal is hugely lacking defensively.

“The manager clearly does not fancy [Matt] Doherty or Djed Spence. It is a problem area and one that I think they will look to address in January.

“If Spurs could get double figures for Emerson Royal, they should and would let him go. Take the money and use the money to sign a replacement. They need to go into the market because Conte is clearly not happy with his options in that position.”

TIF Thoughts on Robinson’s comments…

We believe that Emerson Royal’s time with Spurs has simply not worked out and it’s time for the club to move him on.

The stats show that he’s simply not very good when it comes to his defensive game, as he ranks poorly in a couple of departments from the past year. When compared to other full-backs from Europe’s top competitions, the Brazilian is in the bottom 5% for interceptions and the bottom 21% for blocks made (as per FBref).

What Spurs some supporters will surely have found very frustrating is Antonio Conte’s constant desire to persist with the defender – he’s played 12 Premier League matches this season, which is more than Matt Doherty and Djed Spence.

At some point, you would imagine Conte’s patience will run out, but we think many – including Robinson – will hope it is sooner rather than later. Spurs fans showed their dismay for Emerson in a match against Leeds, where they overly cheered his substitution off the pitch, so it does seem as though his days in N17 are numbered.
