Manchester United’s interest in Frenkie de Jong may not have completely died down, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.
United have held a long-term interest in the Barcelona star, but it was recently reported that his reluctance to leave the Nou Camp would put any speculation to rest.
Erik ten Hag’s side were heavily keen in the summer window but signed Casemiro from Real Madrid instead when it became clear that they could not convince the Dutchman to join.
Speaking to This Is Futbol, Jones claimed that there has been an increase in reports linking De Jong to United again, and this may have even come as a result of a briefing by the club.
“It’s a bit of a strange one. I mean, so many people are reporting again, this interest in Frenkie de Jong,” he stated.
“It seems like there might be a briefing even about the fact that they’re still interested. So I can believe that they still want him.”
TIF thoughts on De Jong and United…
Despite this sudden increase in reporting, it is hard to see De Jong moving to Old Trafford any time soon. And, it’s safe to say that he wouldn’t come cheap as his price tag back in the summer reportedly stood at £70 million.
Although he has worked under Ten Hag at Ajax before, the midfielder is clearly happy to stay at Barcelona despite not being a first-choice pick, and is adamant that he will remain at the club.
Casemiro has been a successful signing, and whilst United could benefit from bringing in a central midfielder, it is not a priority position for them in January, with a striker urgently needed to replace Cristiano Ronaldo.
