Brian Davis, the presenter known as True Geordie, has questioned the decision to not play Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes regularly at the World Cup.

Earlier this week, the action from Qatar threw out a big shock as Brazil were knocked out of the tournament on penalties by Croatia in the quarter-final.

Indeed, Neymar had scored in extra time but Bruno Petkovic then levelled things at 1-1, meaning the game had to be decided by spot-kicks. Croatia scored with all four of their efforts, while the Brazilians missed two and so were sent home.

Guimaraes was left on the bench for the entire game and Davis has criticised the decision, calling it a ‘waste’ of talent in a post shared on Twitter.

Indeed, he wrote: “Bruno Guimaraes was basically ignored by the Brazil manager while being one of the most in-form midfielders in the world.

“What a waste, this could’ve been his tournament.

“Glad he’s coming home with no injuries though.”

TIF thoughts on Bruno Guimaraes and Newcastle…

Guimaraes has been a star for Newcastle in the middle of the park so far this season. Indeed, he has played 12 Premier Lague games and has yet to be on the losing side in all of those starts.

For Brazil, however, he is a lot less important in the eyes of manager Tite. Indeed, the midfielder played just twice in the whole tournament but didn’t start a single game.

However, his intentional coach may now be regretting that as he has decided to step down after Brazil were knocked out. What’s more, Guimaraes has taken one penalty career and he hit the back of the net with his effort. It certainly sounds as if they could have used his quality when it mattered most in Qatar.

Still, as Davis says, fans will be happy their key man can now return to England having avoided any serious injuries while away.
