Leeds United fan Conor McGilligan has urged Jesse Marsch to stop talking about potentially signing Cody Gakpo.

Gakpo has proven to be one of the breakout stars of the season and World Cup, registering nine goals and 12 assists in just 14 Eredivisie games for PSV Eindhoven before following up with three group-stage goals for the Netherlands in Qatar.

After a summer deadline day move to Leeds failed, his stock has risen out of the clasps of the West Yorkshire side who would be unable to rival the European elite circling the 23-year-old.

The frustration for Whites fans to see the one that got away become the star of the season in Europe is one that’s too painful for McGilligan who tweeted: “Move on” after Marsch admitted Leeds were “99.9 per cent” of the way to finalising the Dutchman.

TIF Thoughts on McGilligan’s comments…

It’s obviously frustrating to continually see reactions from the club about their failed pursuit of Gakpo, especially coming from the manager.

The 23-year-old’s 2021/22 campaign was incredibly successful as he bagged 12 goals and 13 assists in 27 league games, prompting interest from the West Yorkshire side who only saw the move fall through at the 11th hour after Gakpo never boarded a private flight to Yorkshire on deadline day.

Likely that insult will be added to injury with the winger previously claimed to be holding out for a move to Manchester United, according to former PSV director John de Jong.

It seems inevitable Gakpo will be on the move either in January or the summer but the Whites and Marsch must move on from the previously failed transfer business.
