Ex-Everton man and Sky Sports pundit Kevin Campbell has stated to Goodison News that Everton owner Farhad Moshiri’s ‘priority’ should be to back Frank Lampard.

Lampard was appointed at the end of January following the sacking of Rafael Benitez. He managed to steer the Toffees clear of the drop last season. They finished 16th, four points clear of the bottom three.

This season, Everton once again find themselves flirting with relegation. The Toffees are 17th in the league and only one point above the relegation zone.

Campbell backs Lampard to be a success at the club, but he needs to be fully backed financially by the owner.

He said: “Frank Lampard proved he can get the job done in difficult circumstances last season.

“He’s not really been backed fully, so he’s got to shape the squad how he wants it.

“That’s the next priority really.

“Again, hiring and firing, everybody’s got an opinion and a manager who they think should take over.

“But a lot of them aren’t realistic because there’s a current manager in who gets the club, who’s never had a chance to shape it.

“So I think Moshiri’s right [to stick with Lampard], whether he’s going to be owner moving forward or not, that’s not the point.

“The point is having a manager with some continuity in the football club, that’s really important.”

TIF Thoughts on Campbell’s comments…

We believe that Lampard should be backed in the January transfer window. He should be allowed to address the issues within the Everton squad. The Toffees boss has made it clear he wants to bring in a striker in the next window.

Goals are certainly the missing ingredient for the club this season. In the league, they’ve only scored 11 goals, which is the joint second-worst of the campaign so far. Everton’s top scorer is Anthony Gordon and Demarai Gray, both with three Premier League goals.

One forward they’ve been linked with, is Beto from Udinese, according to Calciomercato. The 24-year-old has six goals in 15 Serie A matches, so far this season. In addition, he’d be a big physical presence, standing at around 6ft. 3 in.

However, he’s not Premier League-proven, which means he could take time to adapt. In a relegation battle, you need players who are ready to make an instant impact upon arrival.

Whoever they sign, Everton still have a big chunk of the season to go. January could be a big factor that could determine the Toffees’ Premier League status.
