TalkSport contributor David Preece has praised Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford for his ‘brilliant stop’ for England in the World Cup.

The Three Lions booked their passage into the quarter-finals of Qatar 2022 on Sunday night with a convincing 3-0 win over Senegal. Goals from Jordan Henderson, Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka got the job done.

However, England didn’t make the best of starts and with the scores still level the Everton shot-stopper had to make one big save to stop his country from going behind.

Indeed, while it looked as though Senegal forward Ismaila Sarr initially sent the ball over the bar, new footage shows that Pickford actually got a vital touch.

In reaction to the replay, Preece took to Twitter to say: “This is the first brilliant stop of two at a crucial period in the game. Massive contribution to the win.”

Interestingly enough, Preece points out that Pickford made two good saves in the game, but on SofaScore this second save was so subtle they didn’t even record it and so it’s reported that he only made one stop during the game.

However, as is clearly shown in the footage, without his intervention, England could have fallen behind to Senegal – which highlights just how good, and probably underrated, the Everton star is.

It’s not as if he’s been poor for his club in the Premier League this season either. Indeed, as per SofaScore, he has averaged a 7.24 match rating in England’s top-flight, having played 14 games.

Proving his quality despite the Toffees’ wobbling form which leaves them only one place above the bottom three.
