Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek would like to extend his stay at the club, according to journalist Simon Phillips.

The Englishman’s contract runs out in the summer of 2024 and Phillips has suggested he would like to remain at Stamford Bridge, despite previously being linked with a move away.

The 26-year-old has made 20 appearances this season, with his versatility coming in useful as he has played as a wing-back and a central midfielder.

Given his newfound importance to the team, after a difficult few years, there is talk of a contract extension to avoid losing the player for free, particularly after the club lost valuable assets in Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen for nothing – and he could finally be set to establish himself as a starter.

Phillips told GiveMeSport: “It’s an interesting one, because not so long ago, they were talking about extending his contract and they were going to sit down with him and do that.

“Loftus-Cheek, in his eyes, he wants to stay at Chelsea. He’s always maintained the desire to stay here and make it at Chelsea, and he’s continued to prove that in recent seasons.”

TIF Thoughts on Loftus-Cheek…

After a few years hit by injury, as well as spending an unsuccessful season on loan at Fulham, the England international is finally gaining a run of games at Stamford Bridge, and it is no surprise that he wants to stay at the club.

His versatility, as well as his status as a homegrown talent, makes him a useful squad member at the club, and we think they will be well-served by handing him a contract extension to keep him for his prime years.

If he continues to improve, Loftus-Cheek stands a chance at making it back into the England squad, having travelled to the 2018 World Cup – yet he missed the cut for the 2022 tournament. However, being a regular player at Chelsea would give him a strong platform to showcase his talent.
