Journalist Simon Phillips has told GiveMeSport that Chelsea are ‘stepping up’ their interest in Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong.

Phillips claims that the Blues have had their eyes on the Dutchman in recent seasons and they may well look into bringing him to west London come the January transfer window.

Frimpong is only 21 years old, but has made 15 appearances for Leverkusen this season. In the 2022/23 campaign, he’s already found the net five times and provided one assist.

For most of his career, the Dutchman has operated as a right-back. However, he’s been played further up the pitch this term, to some success.

And amid previous talk that the former Manchester City youngster was of interest to Graham Potter’s side, Phillips had this to say about Chelsea’s current stance on Frimpong: “I think it’s a position that Chelsea will address in the summer rather than January, but they are starting to look at targets. Jeremie Frimpong is on there.

“Chelsea have scouted him a few times in recent seasons and they’ve stepped that up again now under the new ownership.”

TIF Thoughts on Phillips’ comments…

We believe that Frimpong is a player that Chelsea should look to pursue in the January transfer window. He’s shown that he can play in a couple of different positions – an asset useful to any team.

The Dutchman would come in as immediate cover and depth for the currently injured Reece James. Marc Cucurella can also play there, but he’s covering for the injured Ben Chilwell and has had an underwhelming season.

Chelsea could really utilise Frimpong as a creative outlet whether they play him as a winger, full-back or wing-back. Among players in his position, he ranks in the top 12% for assists, the top 3% for non-penalty goals and top 1% for completed dribbles (as per FBref).

Frimpong clearly has the ability the score, create goals and drive at the opposition. Getting goals has been a real issue for Chelsea as only seven teams have scored fewer than them in the Premier League this season, so we think the 21-year-old could be a potential solution to that particular problem.
