Celtic are rumoured to be exploring the possibility of bringing another striker to the club in January, which could come as a frustration to Kyogo Furuhashi.
The Daily Record’s Mark Pirie has reported that the Scottish champions are looking to bring in a striker and a full-back to the club in the new year.
One potential option could be Bristol City striker Antoine Semenyo, whose agent even suggested earlier this year that Celtic had been in touch with him regarding a potential move to Parkhead.
However, a deal never materialised for Ange Postecoglou’s side, and the club opted to stick with Furuhashi and Giorgos Giakoumakis as their striking options for the remainder of the campaign.
But with Semenyo’s contract due to expire at the end of this season, the Glasgow giants could yet attempt to sign the 22-year-old for a cut-price fee now or secure his signature on a free transfer next summer.
Whilst Celtic could be encouraged to make a move for the striker again this winter, this may come as a source of frustration for Furuhashi.
Whilst Semenyo would no doubt bolster Postecoglou’s striking department, Furuhashi may feel slightly put out at the fact that the club would consider bringing in another centre-forward when he has largely been such a reliable presence in the Scottish champions’ frontline.
And while the 27-year-old has been a regular scorer of goals this season, he hit even higher standards for Celtic upon his £4.6m signing in 2021, and has bagged 31 goals and provided six assists in 53 appearances for the Parkhead side, according to Transfermarkt.
However, it could be argued that his form has regressed somewhat in his second season, with Giakoumakis hardly exploding into life at Celtic Park himself.
Therefore, whilst we can understand why Celtic fans would welcome the signing of Semenyo – who has scored 17 goals and provided 21 assists in 116 Bristol City appearances – we feel that the club would be better off spending their money in other areas, with Furuhashi proving to be a top-quality striker at Premiership level on his day.
