New Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui may have been given assurances of support in keeping the side in the Premier League this season.

That is according to BBC WM journalist Mike Taylor, who was speaking on Wolves’ Press Pack podcast.

Lopetegui has now taken over the job as head coach at Molineux after watching the side’s 2-0 defeat at home to Arsenal from the stands last weekend.

The former Sevilla manager gave his first press conference as Wolves manager on Monday, which gave the media the opportunity to meet him for the first time.

And Taylor was reacting to Lopetegui’s introduction to the English press with the break for the World Cup now upon us.

He said: “Wolves needed him more than he probably needed this job.

“Yes, he wants to manage in the Premier League, lots of people do. But it’s reasonable, I think, given his track record, to assume that he would have made that eventually, with a team that’s higher up in the league.

“That must suggest that he is certain that he’ll be given the support he’s going to get and he will need, to get Wolves to where they need to be – not just this season, but in the longer term.”

TIF Thoughts on Taylor’s comments…

We think that Wolves fans will be optimistic following Taylor’s views on Lopetegui’s first press conference and will be hoping that a strong January transfer window can help the side currently rooted to the bottom of the Premier League to safety.

The Telegraph’s John Percy has revealed that amid relegation fears, owners Fosun are prepared to inject some cash into the club during the winter transfer window in a bid to steer the club away from the drop zone under the Spaniard.

Therefore, we think that Wolves fans will feel that a change in direction may be around the corner following the resumption of Premier League football at the end of next month.
