Talking Wolves presenter Dave Azzopardi has been left confused by the possible role Fran Garagarza will be taking at the club.
After a long search for a new manager following the departure of Bruno Lage earlier in the season, the Premier League club recently revealed that Julen Lopetegui will now be taking charge.
According to a recent report in the Birmingham Mail, ex-Eibar sporting director Garagarza will also be following the Spaniard over to England, but it ‘isn’t clear exactly what role’ he will take up at Wolves, with a position similar to the one he had in the Basque Country seemingly ruled out.
While talking about the situation on the Talking Wolves podcast, Azzopardi expressed his confusion, saying: “Garagarza is an intriguing one, because he spent many, many years as sporting director of Eibar over in Spain.
“Now, he’s got a very good reputation over there because they did extremely well, rose through the divisions with him as sporting director with them obviously on an extremely tight budget.
He later added: “Unless there’s going to be some sort of handover period between Scott Sellars and Garagarza, I really don’t understand what role he will be.
“Unless he’s some sort of chief analyst where he looks at the performances of both players and possible transfers as well, I don’t know. But I’ll be really intrigued to see what label Wolves put on him when these sorts of moves become official.”
TIF Thoughts on Wolves and the situation…
The Molineux outfit haven’t officially had a sporting director since the departure of Kevin Thelwell in 2020, although Scott Sellars was named technical director in 2021 (via Birmingham Mail).
Sellars isn’t necessarily the most popular man at the club right now and was even booed by the Wolves fans during a recent 4-0 defeat against Leicester City. On top of that, he was also dubbed as the ‘scapegoat of choice for a fanbase with legitimate reasons for anger’ in The Athletic last month.
With that in mind, his position at the club may well be under threat in the long term, but for now, remains in the job. But with Garagarza also set to arrive, it remains unclear as to how exactly the two will work together.
