Journalist and French football expert Robin Bairner has touted Newcastle United to make a possible move for Seko Fofana in the summer transfer market.

The Ligue 1 star is currently playing for Lens but has impressed sufficiently in recent times to see him linked with a future move to some top Premier League clubs.

For instance, Fabrizio Romano has spoken (via Caught Offside) about the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool possibly being interested in signings the  27-year-old.

Of course, though, Newcastle are now also establishing themselves as one of the most attractive teams to join in England – as they push for European football next term – and so Fofana could be tempted to join the Magpies if he does intend to leave Lens.

That is at least the view of Bairner, who told GIVEMESPORT: “If Lens make the Champions League this year, for example, you could see a player like Seko Fofana staying there, simply because of this bond that they’ve got.

“If they don’t make the top three, then again, potentially next summer, this could be a move that happens. Fofana is a player who has all the attributes to play in England, and Newcastle would surely be interested.

“But I imagine he is a player that most teams in England would be interested in, given what he’s produced. But again, it’s a case of whether Lens can keep up with his ambitions.”

TIF thoughts on Seko Fofana and Newcastle United…

Fofana did only sign a new deal with Lens back in September that will keep him tied to the club until 2025. Of course, though, if he doesn’t feel as if the Ligue 1 team can match his ambition, then perhaps he will seek pastures new – just as Bairner suggests.

Last season, the Ivory Coast midfielder established himself as one of the top players in Europe, picking up the Marc-Vivien Foe award – which is handed to the best African player in France’s top flight – and joining former winners such as Victor Osimhen, Nicolas Pepe, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on the list (via BBC Sport).

Evidently, Fofana is a player of great quality and so Newcastle may well be keeping a careful eye on his situation as they potentially look to bolster their midfield options in the summer.
