Image for Celtic: Callum McGregor injury “a major concern”

Callum McGregor’s injury suffered in Celtic’s 3-1 Champions League defeat at RB Leipzig is a “major concern”.

That is the opinion of former Hoops full-back Mark Wilson, who was speaking on the Off the Ball YouTube channel about the side’s defeat in Germany.

McGregor was replaced just before half-time, with the central midfielder limping off to the sidelines after suffering an injury.

The 29-year-old had made 12 appearances for the Glasgow giants this season, but it now looks as if he may be facing a lay-off after Wednesday night’s disappointing defeat.

And Wilson believes that McGregor’s absence will be a concern, with the club’s European participation being reliant on the spine of Ange Postecoglou’s side.

He said: “Callum McGregor has suffered an injury that Ange Postecoglou says doesn’t look good. That’s a major concern.

“And in European competition, your frontmen through the middle aren’t scoring.

“So, this competition heavily relies on the spine of your team, and it’s a bit shaky at the minute for Celtic.”

TIF Thoughts on Wilson’s comments…

We agree with Wilson and think that McGregor will be a huge loss for Postecoglou, with the side now facing an uphill task to make the knockout stages of the Champions League, sitting bottom of their group having earned one point from a possible nine so far.

The 49-time Scotland international has been an impressive presence in the middle of the park for the Celts this term, earning an average SofaScore match rating of 6.96 for his performances in the Premiership.

And while that is only the 16th-highest rating in the squad this term, the fact he had played every minute in the league and Champions League (before his recent sending-off and injury), suggests he is integral to Postecoglou’s side, so we can see why Wilson appears to be concerned.
