ExWHUemployee has revealed that West Ham United defender Harrison Ashby is aiming to be fit enough to play for the first team before the World Cup break.

Back in September, Ex reported that the right-back was out with a ‘groin strain’ that had been causing him some issues, keeping him from gaining any minutes in the senior side.

Indeed, having played in a Europa Conference League qualifying match against Viborg FF and sitting on the bench for the first three Premier League matches, Ashby has since been missing from David Moyes’ squad (via Transfermarkt).

However, in a new update shared on The West Ham Way Patreon page, Ex explained that the 20-year-old would be stepping up his return with the intention of making his way back into the senior setup before the World Cup.

He wrote on Tuesday: “Harrison Ashby has stepped up his return from a niggling groin injury by being selected for the Under-21s’ Papa John’s game tonight versus MK Dons. The MK Dons bench features former Hammers Dan Kemp and Nathan Holland.

“Ashby will be looking to get fit enough to be in contention for some of our cup games before the World Cup break.”

TIF Thoughts on Harrison Ashby and West Ham…

This comes as a boost for West Ham after Ex recently updated fans on the good news regarding Nayef Aguerd.

As Ex mentioned, Ashby featured in the Papa John’s Trophy match but couldn’t help the West Ham academy team pick up a win as they were beaten 2-0 away at MK Dons.

Even so, the young full-back would have been delighted to start in that match and will no doubt hope to get more youth-team minutes under his belt before potentially adding to his six first-team appearances with the Hammers.

Of course, with both Newcastle United and Leeds United hovering over the player ahead of a possible transfer swoop, those at West Ham may also be hoping he can get some minutes in their senior side soon so that they can prove he will get a fair shot at breaking into the team.
