Newcastle United could still be searching for an upgrade on Miguel Almiron, claims former SPFL striker Tam McManus.

That is despite Almiron getting off to a flying start this season and already grabbing six goals in 12 Premier League appearances.

Having only scored nine in his previous 110 appearances in the competition, it has been quite the turnaround for the Paraguayan.

The 28-year-old has started each of the Toon’s top-flight fixtures so far this term and has been one of Eddie Howe’s most-used players since he arrived on Tyneside, with journalist Jordan Cronin stating that he has been ‘transformed‘ under the English coach.

However, despite his scintillating form, ex-Hibernian forward McManus believes that PIF may still wish to sign a replacement.

He told Football Insider“There are always upgrades to be made.

“Almiron is having a brilliant season – it’s whether he can keep it going. I hope that he can, and I’m sure the fans are hoping that as well.

“We have never seen this side of the player before. But we know where Newcastle want to be, and if they can find a more reliable player, then maybe they will do that.

“It’s a possibility. I know they haven’t signed many attackers since the takeover went through, it’s all defenders. So maybe there is some work to do there.”

The Magpies were consistently linked with Bayer Leverkusen winger Moussa Diaby throughout the summer.

A £55m asking price seemingly scuppered any chance of a move, however, it was clear that the Toon were keen to invest in Almiron’s position.

The Frenchman scored 13 times and provided a further 12 assists in 32 appearances last season and has been directly involved in a further seven goals in 16 games this term.

It’s the level of output that Almiron may well reach after his fine start to the campaign, but given Diaby’s consistency and exposure at Champions League-level, PIF may well be enticed to invest regardless.
