Rangers: Andrew Newport slams Antonio Colak for poor Champions League display

Journalist Andrew Newport has slammed Rangers forward Antonio Colak for his display in the club’s most recent defeat.

Making their return to Champions League football this week, things didn’t exactly go to plan for the Scottish outfit as they were comfortably beaten 4-0.

Indeed, facing Ajax over in Amsterdam, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men were completely outclassed by their opponents who had the game won before the first half was even over.

While few impressed in a Rangers shirt, one man seemed to stand out for his particularly poor performance. Indeed, in the player ratings for the Daily Record, Newport handed Colak and 3/10 for his efforts.

The journalist explained: “A passenger. Rangers really need more from their frontman’s hold-up play if they are to survive repeated onslaughts at this level. Might have to start worrying about his place if Morelos can get himself fit.”

Did you think Antonio Colak was poor for Rangers?

TIF thoughts on Antonio Colak and Rangers…

It’s safe to say this wasn’t Colak’s best night for Rangers. According to SofaScore, the stats prove this too as he lost the ball ten times against Ajax which is the joint most in his team. The forward also failed to have a single shot on or off target, with one attempt blocked, completed just 60 per cent of his passing (9/15), having only 25 touches in the whole game.

The 28-year-old moved to Ibrox for £1.8m plus add-ons on a three-year-deal, signing from Greek side PAOK earlier this summer, and has made a decent start to life in Scotland.

Indeed, he has scored seven times in his first 11 outings, but after having failed to net in the Old Firm and now the opening Champions League match (via Transfermarkt) it’s easy to see why Newport feels as though Rangers probably ‘need more’ from him.
