According to Fabrizio Romano, Everton had a bid rejected for forward Mykhaylo Mudryk in the final week of the transfer window as the club wanted far more than €30m (£26m).
Despite the club’s financial situation, the Toffees spent a whopping £70.38m according to Transfermarkt after selling Richarlison, as they brought in the likes of Amadou Onana, Dwight McNeil, Neal Maupay, James Garner and Idrissa Gueye.
However, it has since been revealed by Romano that they tried to bring in another star player in Mudryk, who has garnered a lot of interest after his great form at Shakhtar Donetsk.
Romano told the Que Golazo podcast that while they tried to sign him with a bid of €30m plus add-ons, the Ukrainian club rejected the bid after they saw Manchester United sign Antony for around €100m (£85m).
He said: “They received a proposal on the final week of the transfer window – €30m plus add-ons from Everton – and they decided to say no after Antony [went] to Man United for €100m. They said for us, Mudryk can’t be sold for 30 or 35 or 40 [million]. We want way more than this.
“They’re convinced they’re going to sell him for crazy, crazy money.”
TIF Thoughts on Mudryk…
While we commend Everton for their attempt to bring in Mudryk for just £26m, there was no chance they were going to bring him in for that low price, given the egregious amount of money United spent on Antony. Shakhtar are well within their rights to demand more considering the riches other clubs in the Premier League possess – not to mention Mudryk’s recent displays.
The 21-year-old recently netted his first Champions League goal and recorded nine goal involvements in 11 appearances in last year’s curtailed campaign.
Considering this interest from both Arsenal and Mudryk in a move to London, the Toffees will find it incredibly difficult to compete. Arsenal would appear to be in the driver’s seat and look well-positioned to grab a Champions League spot come the end of the season. Therefore, we think Everton are going to need a miracle to complete this deal.
Will Everton sign Mudryk?
