Insider ExWHUemployee has claimed that there is ‘loose interest’ in Dimitri Payet making a return to West Ham United amid recent speculation.

The 35-year-old left the Hammers back in 2017 in favour of a return to France with Marseille. According to Ex, though, there is talk that the player could be set to make a return to the Premier League club this summer.

Indeed, in a recent post shared on The West Ham Way Patreon page, the insider explained that he had gone to one of his ‘top transfer sources’ in order to find out more about the situation.

However, he stated that a deal was probably ‘unlikely’ due to Payet’s high wages and the fact that West Ham already have good depth in that part of the field.

Ex said: “We reported back in 2018 that Payet wanted to return to the club and he regretted how it ended. He did push through a move and refused to play towards the end of his career with us but this was for off-the-field reasons that we reported in detail at the time when breaking the story.

“It has now emerged in reports that Payet may want ‘One more Dance’ at the club. I put this question to one of my top transfer sources and his response was: ‘He is a great player but 35 now, though he just had a great season, we have [Said] Benrahma and [Maxwel] Cornet in that position and his wages would be huge.’

“I take from this that there is a loose interest if the finances were right but that, really, the deal is very unlikely.”

TIF thoughts on Dimitri Payet and West Ham…

West Ham certainly do have plenty of options in that part of the pitch. As mentioned, Benrahma and Cornet can operate on the wing – and the latter only joined recently from Burnley.

On top of that, Jarrod Bowen, Pablo Fornals, and Manuel Lanzini can all play in attacking midfield/wing roles, so David Moyes has depth there if needed (via Transfermarkt).

However, it has been suggested that Benrahma could be sold this summer, which could open the door for a Payet return. And considering the Frenchman scored 15 goals and provided 23 assists in a short but thrilling spell with the Irons, it’s easy to see why a return could suit both player and club.
