Tottenham Hotspur hold an interest in young midfielder James Garner this summer, but are cautious about making a move for him.

This has been suggested by reliable Spurs correspondent Alasdair Gold, who has been speaking on his YouTube channel about the north London club’s plans for the remainder of the window.

And it is now believed Manchester United would be willing to offload their young talent this summer if a bid of around £15m was to arrive, as Erik ten Hag looks to strengthen his squad.

Spurs have already added Yves Bissouma to Antonio Conte’s options in midfield this summer, but Gold believes Fabio Paratici is a big fan of the 21-year-old prospect.

Garner spent the 2021/22 campaign away from Old Trafford at Nottingham Forest and Gold revealed he had caught Paratici’s attention whilst the Italian was scouting Djed Spence.

He said: “From what I understand, Fabio Paratici really likes him. Whenever he went to see Djed Spence playing last season, he watched him a couple of times last season. He came away each time really impressed by James Garner.

“Now, the issue here is apparently United are willing to let him go for about £15m, but from what I understand, I don’t think Spurs have decided yet whether they’re going to make a move, because the problem is game time for him. He’s unlikely to get it at Spurs.

“Whether that counts against Spurs trying to even make a move for him, but I certainly know there’s interest, I know Paratici really likes him as well.”

TIF Thoughts on Gold’s comments…

It currently feels like Conte’s midfield is stacked with options to choose from, with Rodrigo Bentancur and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg starting both league games and Bissouma coming off the bench.

Who would you rather at Spurs?

Oliver Skipp is also still to come back from injury, and with Conte believed to rate the youngster very highly, you do have to question where Garner would fit in.

In the Championship, Garner certainly provided a greater attacking threat than what Skipp did for Spurs, with four goals and eight assists for Forest (via Transfermarkt).

But given that even Skipp’s path back into the starting XI is not guaranteed, we do feel Spurs could only really have one of Skipp or Garner in the squad given the competition in Conte’s midfield.
