Journalist Ryan Taylor has tipped Tottenham Hotspur to ‘go big’ on a new defender – but not this summer.

Tottenham have made seven signings in this transfer window, as Antonio Conte has looked to strengthen several areas of the pitch, including centre-back with Clement Lenglet on loan from Barcelona.

However, earlier in the transfer window, Spurs were heavily linked with Villarreal defender Pau Torres, but with him having a release clause of £42m, the deal failed to materialise.

Although Spurs have already brought Lenglet to the club this summer, Taylor spoke to GiveMeSport and claimed that they were interested in Torres, but they would have done the deal now if they wanted to – and expects a big centre-back arrival to come in a future window.

“I still think Tottenham might go big on a centre-back, not in this window, but windows to come. At the moment there isn’t really anyone out there that stands out. I know they’ve looked at Pau Torres but they would have done that deal by now if they wanted to,” Taylor said.

TIF Thoughts on Taylor’s comments…

Spurs won comfortably on the opening day of the season, and then went to Stanford Bridge and picked up an impressive point, so it will be interesting to see if Conte looks at his squad and feels like he needs to make any more additions before the transfer window shuts.

The Italian boss might steer clear of Torres because Spurs have already spent just under £108m, so they might not want to fork out another £42m on a centre-back when they already have Lenglet in the building.

However, Taylor has tipped Spurs to bring in another central defender in windows to come, and we wonder if they may look to Torres in January depending on whether they have picked up any injuries to their defence by then.

We need him now, it could well come back to bite us if we don’t sign that class centre back, our defensive line hasn’t really changed from last season, we’ve played neither Spence of Lenglet and now Romero is out we are desperate for another top quality centre back, even more than an attacking midfielder.
