Image for Tottenham Hotspur: Image shows controversial moment in Chelsea draw

Tottenham Hotspur supporters may feel aggrieved following their dramatic trip to Stamford Bridge on Sunday after an image surfaced on Twitter of an incident that appeared to be missed by VAR.

Antonio Conte’s men continued their unbeaten start to the campaign with a 2-2 draw against their London rivals, which saw Harry Kane steal a point in the dying minutes of the game.

However, the latest ‘Battle of the Bridge’ has also brought up a lot of contentious decisions, and it seems another has surfaced involving Cristian Romero and Marc Cucurella.

Romero ended the game at the centre of controversy after pulling the Spaniard’s hair – but he did end the game having committed zero fouls.

Meanwhile, the pair came together in a challenge earlier in the game which saw Romero fall to the floor, however, it was the moments after which saw the Chelsea defender stand on Romero.

TIF Thoughts on the image…

The image does certainly make the incident look a dangerous one on the Argentine defender, with the Chelsea full-back clearly at risk of seriously hurting Romero.

Should Cucurella have seen red for this?

Yes

Yes

No

No

And it was apparent Romero was left furious with the incident after the game as he took to Twitter to retweet the original post calling out Cucurella’s challenge.

There is little doubt that had the Spaniard’s challenge been deemed violent conduct, he will have been given his marching orders by referee Anthony Taylor, as Cucurella may well have been considered to have used ‘excessive force’ in this instance – so we believe the Chelsea man could have got away with one, here.

Given this incident occurred inside the opening 10 minutes of the game, had Cucurella been sent off for serious foul play, it would certainly have changed the dynamic of the game for Spurs.
