Presenter Richard Keys believes Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier should have been sent off at the weekend.

Newcastle United continued their unbeaten start to the Premier League season on Sunday when they impressively drew 3-3 against the champions Manchester City, but given the Magpies had led 3-1, they might be disappointed with the final result.

However, there was a controversial decision in the 75th minute of the match when Trippier was sent off, only for VAR to overrule the original call, with the full-back receiving a yellow card after a review.

After Newcastle could have played the final 15 minutes with 10 men, Keys spoke on his personal blog and claimed that the referee should have stuck with his original call and given the red card.

“Stay out of it VAR. And, of course, we all know the outcome when a ref goes to the monitor because Mike Riley has instructed everybody that VAR makes the final decision. I just wish Gillett had had the b******* to stay with his original call – but he knows full well that he wouldn’t be involved next weekend had he done so. It’s all so wrong,” Keys said.

TIF Thoughts on Keys’ comments…

Although Newcastle impressively came away with a point against reigning champions at the weekend, they might feel slightly fortunate after Trippier’s red card was overturned by VAR, so it would have been interesting to see if they would have held on if the English defender was not on the field.

The Magpies are now one of the only seven sides in the Premier League that have started the season unbeaten after three games, so they will be hoping that they continue this fine form and hopefully push on for a European finish come the end of the campaign.

However, we feel Trippier’s tackle was not reckless or dangerous to the player, nor was it a last-man challenge, so it could have been deemed to be the right decision by the referee as it was just a ‘professional foul’ to stop the counter attack, which is typically given as a yellow card.
