Journalist Craig Hope has been speaking on his Instagram account about the injury scare involving Newcastle United’s Callum Wilson.

Newcastle had St James’ Park rocking on Sunday afternoon as they picked up an impressive point against the Premier League champions, although it could have been all three with the Magpies having raced into a 3-1 lead early in the second half.

Despite the great result and performance, it wasn’t all good news for Newcastle fans and Eddie Howe, as Ryan Fraser picked up an injury in the warm-up, Wilson was substituted off just after the hour mark as a precaution over a hamstring injury and Dan Burn was forced off with concussion.

Hope spoke post-match about the injury that Wilson appears to be now carrying with him.

“A little bit of news on Wilson – I asked Eddie Howe in the press conference just now how he is and Eddie said he felt his hamstring at half-time and they’ve taken him off as a precaution.

Do Newcastle need a new striker?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

“On one hand, that’s a concern, yes, and it does heighten the need for a striker as I’ve been banging the drum for a long time now. I don’t think you can rely on Wilson’s body going forward throughout the season.

“It would worry me that all of the good work we’ve talked about there could be undermined by an injury to Wilson, by the loss of Wilson. So a little bit of news on that front from Eddie.”

TIF Thoughts on Wilson’s injury record…

It is obviously a huge concern for Howe and all Newcastle fans that Wilson never seems to be too far away from a long-term injury as he’s sustained one in each of his two seasons playing for the Magpies.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

The striker has relocated his family up from the south coast to Newcastle which will see him spend less time travelling and potentially free up time for more recovery sessions, and in turn, may well see the risk of injury reduced.

While Wilson was able to walk off the pitch unaided, the fact that Howe had to bring up this hamstring issue would suggest that he is concerned by it, so it may be unlikely he features in the squad for Wednesday’s trip to face Tranmere Rovers.
