Richard Keys has claimed that Leeds United’s win at the weekend was nothing to do with their style of play and running more.

Leeds United have started this Premier League season immensely, after picking up seven points from a possible nine, which is a huge difference to last season, after they just about scrapped relegation on the final day of the season.

The most impressive of the three results so far came on Sunday when the Whites beat Chelsea 3-0 at Elland Road, which put an end to Thomas Tuchel’s side’s unbeaten start.

Tuchel was critical of his side’s performance, but did not feel the defeat was due to the Leeds players running more, with the Whites racking up far more kilometres run over the 90 minutes – 10.5km to be exact.

And speaking on his personal blog, Keys agreed with the Blues boss and said that the loss was not down to Leeds running more or the style of Jesse Marsch’s side.

He said: “I’m with Tuchel. ‘It was nothing to do with pressing,’ he said. ‘Nothing to do with running less kms and nothing to do with the style of Leeds. I don’t see that an own goal and a set-piece are anything to do with style.’ Spot on. And let’s not forget Chelsea should’ve been two up before Leeds had barely had a sniff of the ball. Leeds wouldn’t have covered anything like the distance that they did then.”

TIF Thoughts on Keys’ comments…

It may be deemed harsh from Keys/Tuchel to claim that the result was not down to the style of play from Leeds because they went and beat the side that finished third in the Premier League last season, so it is important to give them credit for this.

Leeds were clinical when handed the opportunities by Chelsea, while the gulf in the running stats – insignificant or not – displayed a desire that more than warrants a victory, on top of actually scoring the goals to secure the three points.

The Whites now need to carry in this fine form for the rest of the season to ensure they have a more successful finish than last term, and hopefully, a similar season to their first year back in the top flight two terms ago when they finished ninth.
