Football writer Jordan Cronin has been left pretty excited as Newcastle United have recently been linked with a summer move for Joao Pedro.

Earlier this week, it suddenly emerged that the Magpies had a very real interest in signing the Brazilian. Indeed, The Athletic reported that a bid in the region of £20m for the player had been rejected.

The same report claims that Watford are adamant the player will not be sold, so it remains unclear whether or not Newcastle will continue with the pursuit.

In reaction to all the excitement, Cronin offered his opinion on the matter, taking to Twitter to explain why Pedro could be a good fit for the club.

He wrote: “The interest in Joao Pedro has come out of the blue but it shouldn’t be a surprise.

“Ticks a lot of boxes – only 20 and has room to grow with the club. Similar profile to Hugo Ekitike.

“Oh, and he’s Brazilian.”

TIF Thoughts on Joao Pedro and Newcastle…

It is interesting to hear Cronin namecheck Ekitike. The striker was seemingly close to a move to Newcastle but eventually ended up signing for Paris Saint-Germain instead – which shows how highly rated he was.

If Joao Pedro is of a similar profile, it’s easy to see why he could be an exciting prospect. What’s more, unlike Ekitike, he would come with Premier League experience.

Indeed, still only 20 years old, the Brazilian played 28 times in the league for Watford last year, scoring three goals – including an equaliser at St James’ Park last season – and one assist.

It’s unclear if Newcastle will be able to land their man, but it’s easy to see why Cronin is excited and how he could be a fine signing if he was to arrive this summer.
