According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Newcastle United could use Wesley Fofana’s situation to make a move for top target James Maddison at the end of the window.

Despite moving fast in the early part of the window with signings like Sven Botman and Nick Pope, the Magpies have been relatively quiet with incomings, but with just days left in the summer window, they have ramped up their efforts by closing in on Alexander Isak earlier this week.

They have also been linked with a late move for Lucas Paqueta, but the Brazilian is not the only world-class midfielder Eddie Howe’s side could look to bring in before the window slams shut.

Speaking on the latest episode of NUFC Matters, Jacobs claimed the club could look to make a late move for Foxes star man Maddison after they previously made an offer which was rejected.

Jacobs said: “Newcastle have learned very quickly that Leicester not only won’t sell Fofana and Maddison, but they’d like to offer Maddison a new contract.

“So, I suppose late in the window, you might come back with an offer if you’re Newcastle. I’m not saying they will. But it’s a tactic, isn’t it, if Fofana’s still there and Newcastle feel there’s opportunism and they haven’t got another target, then you might just come back and say take it or leave it, and Newcastle have been very good, again, at being tactical with their offers and sticking to their guns.”

TIF Thoughts on Maddison to Newcastle…

The Magpies have stormed into the 22/23 Premier League season as they are currently unbeaten through their first three names, most recently putting on a stellar and brave performance against Manchester City, earning themselves s 3-3 draw.

Despite this great form, the Tyneside club are not resting on their laurels and are still bringing in additions to improve the squad, and bringing in a player of Maddison’s quality will do this tenfold.

So far this season the England international has picked up two goals and one assist in his first three games, but last season is where he shone for the Foxes. During his 53 appearances across all competitions, he bagged 30 goals and assists, his best return for the club.

Linking Maddison, who has been described as a ‘game changer’, with their attacking output of Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson would excite any fans, not just Newcastle. He would also be the signing that puts Newcastle on the map and will make all teams, including the top six, fear them. It feels like a no-brainer, but prying him away from Leicester is going to take a miracle.

There is not the slightest chance that the Saudis will get Maddison. Relegation and potential financial oblivion would likely follow and Leicester’s owners know all this too well.
