Leeds United’s potential signing of Borussia Dortmund and Portugal full-back Raphaël Guerreiro would be a “huge” transfer for the club.

That is according to journalist Pete O’Rourke, who was speaking to The Transfer Tavern about the Whites’ potential transfer business, heading into the final week of the window.

CBS Sports journalist Ben Jacobs has previously told GIVEMESPORT that Guerreiro’s name is one he had “heard mentioned ” when talking about a potential new left-back at Elland Road this season.

Jesse Marsch is in need of another full-back, with Junior Firpo being the only out-and-out left-back in the squad, especially after Stuart Dallas’ femoral fracture injury last season.

And O’Rourke believes that Guerreiro’s addition to Marsch’s squad would be “a real coup” if the Whites’ could secure his signature this summer.

“It’d be a huge signing, Guerreiro,” O’Rourke told The Transfer Tavern.

“Been some top clubs across Europe linked with him so if Leeds were able to, it’d be a real coup and a real statement.

“Seems unlikely that he would leave Borussia Dortmund right now who can offer Champions League football.”

TIF Thoughts on O’Rourke’s comments

We believe that whilst Leeds fans will be excited about the club’s interest in the 28-year-old this summer, they will also be realistic in the sense that he may not want to give up Champions League football just yet.

The 56-time Portugal international, who has been described as “amazing” by Edin Terzic, made 23 Bundesliga appearances for Dortmund last season, scoring four goals and providing three assists according to Transfermarkt, which ranks him in the top 2% of full-backs across Europe’s top five leagues and European competition for non-penalty goals per 90 minutes (0.20) over the last 365 days, according to FBref.

Not only is he an efficient goalscorer from left-back, but he is also an exceptional passer of the ball, ranking in the top 2% of full-backs for progressive passes per 90 minutes (6.76), and top 6% for passes attempted per 90 (73.00), according to the same stats provider.

Therefore, we agree with O’Rourke and believe that Guerreiro’s signing would be an incredibly astute piece of business, if Leeds could negotiate the right price for the Borussia Dortmund articles.
