Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer was left stunned by the display of Kieran Trippier on Wednesday night in the Carabao Cup.

In what turned out to be a fairly comfortable win for Eddie Howe’s side they were definitely given an early scare after finding themselves behind to League Two Tranmere Rovers early on.

And it was a night of injury issues for the Magpies as Jamaal Lascelles suffered a broken nose and Emil Krafth was stretchered off in the first half.

The injury to the Swede forced Howe to look to his bench and bring on the experienced Trippier who transformed the game playing a major role in both goals for the Toon.

And it was apparent Shearer was left blown away by the quality the former Atletico Madrid man brought to the game after coming on inside the first half: “He’s very very good,” Shearer replied in response to George Caulkin’s tweet hailing the right-back.

TIF Thoughts on Shearer’s comments…

Newcastle started the game off really poorly. And that was seen through the scoreline as they found themselves behind in the early stages of the game.

Is Trippier NUFC's best signing under PIF?

However, the introduction of Trippier completely changed the game and his quality was evident from his set-piece plays having taken both corners for the two goals and providing six key passes in under an hour of football.

Trippier’s impact since arriving on Tyneside as been huge having now scored three goals in just 11 appearances for Howe’s side after joining in January.

With this in mind, we think it is essential Trippier can maintain fit this season if Newcastle wants any kind of relative success given they have not lost a league game in which he has started (via Transfermarkt).
