Journalist Ben Jacobs has recently claimed that Newcastle United could obtain the services of Christian Pulisic during the ‘desperation days’ of the window, despite the player preferring to remain at his current club over a move to the Toon.

As the transfer deadline nears, we are seeing a lot of teams desperately searching to either bring in or sell assets in order to rebuild their squads. One of these teams is Newcastle, who are looking to bolster their forward options after completing deals for the likes of Sven Botman and Matt Targett previously in the window.

With the window heading towards its conclusion, a new link has emerged in the form of American ace Pulisic, who has become surplus to requirements at Chelsea since the arrival of Raheem Sterling, and Jacobs believes the Magpies could get a deal done towards the end of the window – despite Pulisic favouring a move to Serie A.

Speaking on NUFC Matters, Jacobs said: “Pulisic is a really interesting one, because his preference is to stay at Chelsea rather than move to Newcastle – but only if he gets game time, and because it’s a World Cup year, he might be persuaded and would tick a lot of boxes for Newcastle because they want that creative-minded player along with an attacker.

“Those are still the two priorities for Newcastle: find a creative-minded player – hence their interest in James Maddison – and find a striker to support Callum Wilson.

“So Pulisic would be excellent and might be persuaded to go out on loan. He said at the beginning of the window that he would prefer a move somewhere like Serie A, and Juventus were the club that he was being touted with.

“But now we’re getting into the desperation days of the window, and he’s a player that’s guaranteed to start at a World Cup – but that doesn’t mean because of that, he can be complacent, so he wants the game time, he wants to rediscover his form.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

“And I think it would be a good fit at Newcastle United, so there is a genuine growing feeling that as the window ticks down, if Chelsea get in who they want to bring in, that Pulisic to Newcastle or on a loan elsewhere – Serie A [clubs] could still make a move for him – is very, very likely.”

TIF Thoughts on Jacobs’ comments…

Despite having star attackers like Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin, the Magpies could use a player of Pulisic’s calibre, as the American has Champions League experience and can help take the club to the next level.

While the 23-year-old, who has been hailed as a ‘sensation‘, has struggled to establish himself as an integral player for Chelsea, he has shown he has the talent that a club like Newcastle could utilise. His eight goals and five assists for the Blues last season would rank him joint-top with Callum Wilson in both categories.

As Jacobs stated, it is also a World Cup year, and therefore, Pulisic will surely want to get as much game time as possible to be in the best form for his national side come November. For this reason alone, it makes sense for the player to look for a move to a new club.

The issue they could face is that if a club like Juventus are seriously interested, they can offer Champions League football, but Newcastle are in a league Pulisic already knows well and have such a bright future, so it may come down to the player’s preference.
