According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Newcastle United could still be in the running for Christian Pulisic despite the player’s desire for Champions League football and a move to Serie A.

The Magpies have had a strong start to the 2022/23 Premier League season, sitting sixth in the table and unbeaten after three games, but they are still looking to bolster their attacking options before the end of the window.

Despite the imminent signing of Alexander Isak for £58m, it looks like they’re not done there, as they reportedly want to use one of their domestic loan spots to bring in USA international Pulisic, who has become surplus to requirements at Chelsea.

However, according to Jacobs, Pulisic wants to join the Serie A and continue to play in the Champions League but believes he could be tempted by consistent playtime if no other offers come in as it is a World Cup year.

Jacobs told NUFC Matters: “The thing that Newcastle can offer is game time and confidence and form and momentum, which is all-important in a World Cup year. And the advantage of a loan, I suppose, is if Pulisic feels he can’t get Champions League football by moving and he’s not going to be that integral to Chelsea’s Champions League [campaign], then maybe he is persuaded in a World Cup year to make the move.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

“It’s certainly been spoken about. I’ve always been told with Pulisic that if he moves, he’d like to go to Serie A. And he’s been hoping that Juventus will come in for an offer, but that hasn’t happened. So this is one to watch towards the end of the window as a late move because Chelsea don’t really want to sanction Pulisic to Manchester United.” (37:12)

TIF Thoughts on Pulisic to Newcastle…

Interestingly, Michael Bridges claimed that Christian Pulisic potentially leaving Chelsea would come as a ‘surprise’.

While it is understandable that Pulisic still wants to play at the highest level and is intrigued by a move to Italian giants Juventus, considering first and foremost he needs to consistently play, a move to Newcastle, in our eyes, is the best move for him.

The Magpies may not have European football right now, but there is no question they are now one of the most exciting projects in world football and with their current form, there is no reason why they could not finish this season in a top seven spot.

This move looks to only be a loan as well, so it really is a win/win for both parties. Newcastle gets a Premier League-proven winger who can be an immediate improvement in their side, and Pulisic gets guaranteed game time to build his form and confidence ahead of his World Cup mission.

This move could be one of the most exciting when it comes to the rest of the season, we will have to wait and see if they can get it done. But surely if Juventus aren’t interested and Chelsea does not want to sell to United, Tyneside is the best place for Pulisic.
