Newcastle United are waiting on the results of Callum Wilson’s scans to determine whether he will be set for further time on the sidelines.
This is according to Craig Hope, who has been speaking on his Instagram page following Eddie Howe’s latest press conference on Tuesday morning.
It is believed the Englishman was brought off on Sunday as a precaution after feeling some tightness in his hamstring, and has therefore been advised to undergo a scan.
Howe had suggested there was nothing more to it than it merely being a precautionary procedure and Wilson was not expected to miss any game time:
“He’s OK, the normal process is he goes for a scan and we wait for the results, we hope it’s not too serious,” said Howe.
However, Hope did pick up on something Howe said during the media gathering which may suggest otherwise, with the possibility of Wilson’s injury record being added to already in the 2022/23 campaign.
Hope said: “I will say that his [Howe’s] tone in there with us was still one of it is a normal process to go for a scan, and they are hopeful it is not too serious.
“But I asked the question, if it is more than that, does it affect your transfer strategy during the remaining couple of weeks of the window? And he said, ‘well, we’ll have to wait and see to learn the extent to see how long he’s going to be out for.’
“And just that language for me, your ears prick and you think maybe Callum Wilson is looking at a period of time on the sidelines. We’ll have to wait and see on that – as I said, he went for a scan, but I thought that was potentially very significant in terms of how it affects what they’re going to do over the course next couple of weeks.”

This would be an obvious blow for Newcastle if Wilson is set to miss some time due to injury given the start to the new campaign he has made, with two goals in three appearances.

However, it is perhaps the bigger picture which will frustrate supporters even more, considering his second half of last season was hampered because of a long-term injury.
It just feels like a never-ending cycle of injury setbacks for the striker, making it almost impossible for Newcastle to plan their season due to his unreliability to remain fit.
In addition to this, Newcastle are still yet to bring in a new striker so they currently only have Chris Wood as backup, with the New Zealander only managing to score two goals for the club since joining in January.
