The Athletic’s Jack Collins recently took to Twitter to share his shock over the recent ‘strange’ twist in Fulham’s deal for long-term target Justin Kluivert, as it has now been reported the deal is off.

Despite their great start to the 2022/23 Premier League season, the Cottagers have struggled in the transfer window in the last few weeks after completing deals for the likes of Joao Palhinha, Andreas Pereira and Issa Diop.

However, they looked likely to bring in at least one more target before the deadline, with Roma’s Kluivert heavily linked with a move, but it now looks like the deal is off due to a refused work permit due to a lack of recent appearances for the Italian side.

In the wake of the revelation, Collins shared his view on social media, claiming that it is ‘absolutely bizarre’ and that players with smaller profiles and less game time than Kluivert have had deals go through in the past.

He wrote: “This is really quite strange. Players with far less profile and appearances have moved this summer. Absolutely bizarre.”

TIF Thoughts on Fulham missing out on Kluivert…

There is no doubt Fulham could use some more firepower up front, as if they were to lose current star striker Aleksandar Mitrovic for an extended amount of time, they could be in serious trouble and potentially face relegation again.

While losing out on a player at this time in the transfer window is always going to be tough to take and replace, we are not convinced that Kluivert would have been a significant contributor for the side over the likes of Bobby Reid or Neeskens Kebano, who have both started the season well.

Last season, the Dutchman picked up just four goals and six assists in 27 Ligue 1 appearances for Nice, and while that is not a bad return, if he cannot hit over 10 goals and assists in France, we don’t hold much hope that he can do it the Premier League for a club like Fulham.

It is going to be hard to find an alternative signing after putting so much effort into signing Kluivert, but this could be seen as a bullet dodged in the future.
