Tottenham Hotspur are now just one step away from sealing the services of the Barcelona centre-back Clement Lenglet this summer.

This is what the transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has claimed on the latest episode of his Here We Go podcast where he discussed the latest in the summer market.

A left-sided centre-back was believed to be high up on Antonio Conte’s wishlist coming into this summer’s window and it seems the Italian may be close to ticking another position off their to-do list.

Lenglet is not believed to have been too high up on Tottenham’s shortlist going into the window, however, major setbacks in their pursuit of Alessandro Bastoni has seen Fabio Paratici forced to look elsewhere.

With Spurs setting off for their pre-season tour of South Korea on the weekend, it now seems as if they may be joined by a new face in the French defender:

(10:15) “Let me mention, Lenglet discussing about centre-backs, [he’s] one step away from joining Tottenham. It’s going to be a loan deal and so everything is agreed on player side.

“They are discussing, the two clubs, to complete everything as soon as possible but Lenglet will be Tottenham player very soon if nothing crazy happens.”

TIF Thoughts on Romano’s comments…

It is pretty apparent that Tottenham’s search for a superstar left-sided centre-back has not gone to plan this summer with both Bastoni and Gvardiol unlikely to leave this summer.

Will Lenglet start ahead of Ben Davies?

Yes

Yes

No

No

With this in mind, we actually quite like Tottenham’s approach not to waste money on a player who they don’t necessarily feel will make a big improvement over what Ben Davies can provide.

Instead, it feels like Paratici is proving Davies with some cover for the campaign in the expected loan signing of Lenglet and then may return for their top targets next summer.

Lenglet, who Didier Deschamps called ‘world class’, has had a difficult time of it in Barcelona recently, however, it is worth remembering Dejan Kulusevski did not exactly set the world alight at Juventus and he has taken to the Premier League like a duck to water.
