Journalist Mark Guidi has claimed that the signing of Ridvan Yilmaz is a real sign of how serious Rangers are this season in terms of progressing in the league and Europe.

Rangers have signed seven players so far this summer, and one of them was 21-year-old left-back Yilmaz from Besiktas, who will act as a replacement for Calvin Bassey, who recently left the club to sign for Ajax.

Yilmaz is a product of the Besiktas youth academy and made his debut in the Super Lig in the 2018/19 campaign, making 62 first-team appearances in all competitions for the Turkish side, where he netted four times and chipped in with seven assists.

Although Rangers have now signed seven players this summer, Guidi spoke on The Go Radio Football Show (25th July) and claimed that the signing of Yilmaz is a real indication of how determined Rangers are in terms of getting the title back from Celtic next season.

He said: “Yilmaz is a player that Giovanni van Bronckhorst has wanted, he’s been on the radar for several weeks. And again, it’s an indication of how serious Rangers are about progressing in Europe and getting the title back from Celtic.”

TIF Thoughts on Guidi’s comments…

Rangers opted to cash in on Bassey after he impressed last season, making 50 appearances in all competitions, so they have sold him in a deal that could reach up to £23m, which has meant that even after signing a raft of new players, the club have still currently made a profit of around £16m this summer to date.

The Scottish side fell just short last season in the Europa League and in the SPFL, so bringing in young talents such as Yilmaz who were playing in the Champions League last term is going to be a step in the right direction for Giovanni van Bronckhorst in terms of achieving his goals next term.
