Commentator Derek Clark has expressed his delight after hearing that James Tavernier is set to sign a new deal with Rangers.

According to trusted transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, the club captain has agreed to sign a new contract with the Scottish outfit until June 2026.

As things stand, the defender’s current deal is set to expire in 2024, so it makes a lot of sense for Rangers to now be making sure they can get a clear picture of his future.

And while speaking about the positive development on The Rangers Review podcast, Clark outlined just how happy he was with the news. While he also stated that the contract will mean he could spend a decade with the club – which he felt was ‘incredible’.

He explained: “Let’s talk about James Tavernier, then. This came out last night [Thursday] that he has signed a new Rangers deal until 2026, I believe.

“On the face of things, this is fantastic news to get him tied down.

“It would take him up towards a testimonial, of course, which is quite incredible when you think about it, the journey that Tavernier has been on to this stage, and it just looks like he’s getting better and better. This is fantastic news.”

TIF thoughts on James Tavernier and Rangers…

As Clark mentions, this new deal could keep Tavernier at the club for over a decade, having joined from Wigan in 2015, meaning he would then be eligible for a testimonial.

The club captain has lifted three major trophies with Rangers, including the Scottish Premiership, during his 347-game spell at Ibrox.

With that in mind, it’s not hard to see why Clark has called the news ‘fantastic’ and if he does indeed take part in that testimonial one day it would be hard to say Tavernier doesn’t deserve it.
