Tottenham Hotspur: Journalist makes claim on next signing

Image for Tottenham Hotspur: Journalist makes claim on next signing

Journalist Alex Crook has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur’s will prioritise signing another centre-back rather than a more attacking player, despite recently signing Clement Lenglet.

Tottenham have had a busy first half of the summer transfer window as they have acquired five new players, covering several areas of the pitch. The latest addition that Antonio Conte has made is Lenglet on loan from Barcelona in an attempt to shore up the defence.

However, Conte is not looking to stop there, as Spurs have been heavily linked with Djed Spence and Pau Torres as the Italian coach clearly feels that his squad still needs upgrading before the end of the transfer window.

And despite signing Lenglet on loan from Barcelona this summer, Crook spoke to GiveMeSport and claimed that the main priority for Spurs remains a central defender, rather than acquiring a No 10.

He said: “I’ve been told that a centre-back is more of a priority (than a No 10).

“Obviously, they’ve signed Lenglet, but I think they will sign one more as well because they’re going to play a back three, ideally with Spence and Perisic as the wing-backs.”

Do you think Spurs need a new defender?

TIF Thoughts on Crook’s comments…

Spurs’ back three typically consisted of Eric Dier, Cristian Romero and Ben Davies last season, so the signing of Lenglet is expected to be a replacement for Davies because he is a left-footed defender, so will play on that side of the three, while Davies is naturally a left-back, so he can return to his preferred position and remain as an emergency backup option.

However, Joe Rodon and Davinson Sanchez were both out of favour under Conte last season, so they might not be central defenders that Conte sees as trustworthy, so it would not be a surprise if he does opt to bring in another defender before the end of the transfer window, and one of those two men may well be shown the door.
