Journalist Ross Gregory has said on NUFC Matters that there isn’t much to the rumours linking Newcastle United with Gabriel Barbosa.

Transfer insider Dean Jones wrote in his GIVEMESPORT column that the Magpies are set to be offered the Brazilian in the coming weeks with his agents hoping to sound out a move to the Premier League.

Any deal is thought to cost around £30m (90min) and having recently seen their deal for Reims forward Hugo Ekitike collapse they are thought to be looking at alternatives.

However, Gregory has admitted that although he has seen Barbosa being raised there isn’t anything major behind the speculation.

Would you take a chance on Barbosa at £30m?

(17:47)”I’ve heard his name mentioned a few times but nothing concrete. Again is he someone that is a realistic option I’m not 100% certain.

“I think he’d be someone who would really excite the fans. But it’s not one that I’ve heard of being a concrete sort of option at the minute.

TIF Thoughts on Barbosa and Newcastle…

Gregory’s claims certainly aren’t unfounded as Gabigol as he is commonly known would be sure to light up St. James’ Park having recently reached a century of goals for his current employers at Flamengo and he would link up with international teammates Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes.

He was plucked from his home country back in 2016 by Inter Milan but after an underwhelming period with just one goal in ten appearances and loan spells elsewhere he sealed a permanent switch back to Brazil having fired Flamengo to Serie A and Copa Libertadores success the year previous on loan.

He netted 34 times and created a further 11 goals in just 41 appearances but whether or not Newcastle are the side to give him another chance in Europe seems unlikely at present.
