According to Ben Jacobs, Newcastle United have enquired about Rennes star Kamaldeen Sulemana, who he thinks could become a fan-favourite on Tyneside.

The Magpies have been looking to bring in a new winger to play alongside Allan Saint-Maximin but have so far struggled, having been rebuffed in their pursuit of Jack Harrison.

It looks like they have now turned their attention to Sulemana from Rennes, and while they have not advanced in talks as of yet, Jacobs believes he’s got the attributes to play for the Premier League side.

Jacobs told NUFC Matters: “Newcastle have enquired about him, he’s at Rennes and I think that he is a name being looked at concurrently with players like Harrison, and I don’t think that Newcastle are in any way advanced here, but what I can tell you is that he’s got the attributes that would make him a real fan-favourite.”

An easy one to start with, where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

TIF Thoughts on Sulemana to Newcastle…

The Ghanaian winger, who has been called ‘faster than Neymar’, has only just started his career, but he has already shown he’s an impressive talent after picking up five goals and three assists in all competitions for Rennes while ranking in the 99th percentile for dribbles completed, the 96th for tackles and in the 87th for progressive carries per game compared to other attacking midfielders and wingers in the top five leagues.

These stats show his versatility going forward and defending, which is essential to being successful in the Premier League, especially for a side like Newcastle who are pushing to compete in the higher sections of the league.

It is reported that Rennes are looking for something around £30m for the winger, and he has been suggested as an alternate to Harrison, who is priced at £35m. We do not know what Sulemana would be like in the Premier League, while we know Harrison is a serviceable winger who has room for improvement. A £5m difference is not a lot, especially when it comes to Newcastle, so if that small difference is the difference between an unknown and certainty, would it not be best to cough up the money?

I guess we shall see.
