Journalist Dean Jones has claimed that Moussa Diaby is the main priority for Newcastle United this summer and are even prepared to pay over the odds for the Frenchman.

There have been reports stating that Newcastle United are heavily interested in signing Diaby from Bayer Leverkusen this summer, but the German side are not too keen on selling him and it would take at least a £50m bid for them to even open talks with the Premier League side.

Diaby was in impressive form last season for Leverkusen, as he featured 42 times in all competitions whilst netting 17 times and adding 14 assists, which is what has caused them to slap such a high price tag on him.

Despite the German club attempting to scare Newcastle off the idea of signing Diaby with their high asking price, Jones spoke to GiveMeSport and claimed that he is someone who the Magpies are ‘sticking to’ as their priority this summer.

He said: “Diaby is the priority and they’re sticking to that. I still think that this might be a transfer whereby they end up slightly overpaying if that’s what it takes to get him.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’s comments…

Newcastle have brought in three players this season – Nick Pope, Matt Targett, and Sven Botman – but are yet to upgrade their attacking options. And with their top scorer in the league being Callum Wilson with just eight goals, after only featuring 18 times, bringing in someone who can add goals to the squad should be the next priority for Howe.

Diaby provided 25 goal involvements in 32 Bundesliga games last season for Leverkusen, so with this being over half the number of goals scored throughout the Magpies squad last season, there is no surprise Newcastle are making the France international their main priority this summer.
