Chris Hamill believes that Newcastle United should target Callum Hudson-Odoi this summer.

The Chelsea academy graduate was once a target of Bayern Munich, but a move never came to fruition. And since then, he hasn’t really progressed, with injuries and competition for places at Stamford Bridge limiting his game time.

Speaking on Football Daily’s Sunday Vibes, Hamill outlined his belief that Newcastle should go for Hudson-Odoi this summer, saying: “There’s a club that Chelsea can get a big old fee out of, and they don’t have to sell him to one of their direct rivals.

“He’d be loved there, could be a hero. A huge upgrade on Almiron on that right-hand side, if he can stay fit.

“I think if Newcastle offered him a big, old wedge, and said ‘you’re guaranteed to start, and this is a club going places, here’s some of our other targets’, he might be enticed to be part of the project.”

TIF Thoughts on Callum Hudson-Odoi…

As of right now, a move to Newcastle looks unlikely for Hudson-Odoi. According to The Guardian, Eddie Howe is keen on the Chelsea winger, but nothing more has progressed, while Newcastle have not acted on that interest.

It would certainly be an interesting move. Hudson-Odoi desperately needs consistent game time. Last season, he managed just 15 Premier League appearances. For context, Jadon Sancho, who is just one year older than Hudson-Odoi at 22, made 29 Premier League appearances for Manchester United last season.

We’ve seen other players move on from English clubs for the benefit of their game time and go on to find their best form. Sancho did it by leaving Manchester City as a young player, while Tammy Abraham has flourished at AS Roma since leaving Chelsea last summer.

If Hudson-Odoi wants to receive adequate game time, he may need to follow his countrymen’s examples by jumping ship. Newcastle could present the ideal option, too. They are a club on the up, entering an era of potential success under new ownership. If there was ever a time to make a move to St James’ Park, it is now, it seems.
