Journalist James Marshment has claimed that if Anthony Gordon did sign for Newcastle United then it would be a bit of a risk.

There have been reports stating that Newcastle United have been in talks with their fellow Premier League side over Gordon, but the same report suggests that there has been no official bid made yet and Everton are keen to keep their wide midfielder.

Gordon had his first full season as a regular for Everton last season, he impressed after featuring 40 times in all competitions for the Toffees and won the Players’ Player of the Season and Young Player of the Season awards.

With Gordon being like with a move to Newcastle this summer, Marshment has claimed on the Just Joe Football Show YouTube channel that it would be a bit of a risk because of his numbers last season.

“Anthony Gordon as well, by the way, he’s a very good player and he’s got a lot of talent, but his numbers aren’t that good. His numbers aren’t that impressive, if Newcastle are signing him for £35m/£40m they are buying potential really as much as anything, and that to me is a bit of a risk,” Marshment said.

TIF Thoughts on Marshment’s comments…

Gordon only managed to find the back of the net four times and assisted three times in 40 appearances last season, however, it is important to understand that he was playing in a struggling Everton side.

So, even though he might have worked hard and impressed, his side were not in the best form to be providing him with constant opportunities to score.

At just 21 years old, Gordon has plenty of time to add goals and assists to his game, and this could be aided with a move away from Goodison Park, to a club like Newcastle, who are a club on the up and they could bring in more players to provide consistent chances for Gordon.
